COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This Handmade Papermaking class focuses on processing Sisal fiber in preparation for Suminagashi Marbling. Sisal refers to the rope or twine that comes from the Agave plant. Sisal is a highly compatible fiber for accepting the ink from Suminagashi Marbling, meaning"floating ink" in Japanese, which is the process of making delicate swirled gestures & patterns on the surface ofwater and transferring the patterns onto paper or fabric. We will start by cooking the Sisal fiber using Soda Ash, after cooking we will clean the fiber, from there we'll beat the Sisal into pulp, unload, pull sheets of Sisal, press, dry via dry box and conclude by practicing Suminagashi Marbling techniques.This Handmade Papermaking class focuses on processing Sisal fiber in preparation for Suminagashi Marbling. Participants will gain hands on Papermaking experience, while learning, processing and examining the environmental and historical contexts of Sisal and Suminagashi.
SCHEDULE:
Class meets on Friday November 28th, Saturday November 29th and Sunday November 30th from 11:00AM to 5:00PM, breaking for Lunch from 1:30PM to 2:30PM.
MATERIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Bring your own boots & clothes you're comfortable getting wet. Fiber, Materials & Equipment Provided.
Note: We will be cooking outdoors with Soda Ash, in the natural elements, moving indoors, shifting between environments, physically engaging our bodies, experiencing a variety of temperatures & conditions.
