COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A Handmade Papermaking class focused on processing Denim into Handmade Paper. We will start by processing 100% Denim fiber which is made from Cotton & Indigo. We will cut the fiber down into small pieces, soak the denim in hot water, then load our Hollander Beater and beat the Denim fiber to a pulp, we will then practice sheet formation, pulp drawing and mark-making throughout the month of March. Participants will have the chance to build a series of work, gain hands on Papermaking experience, while learning, processing and examining the environmental and historical contexts of Denim, Cotton and Indigo. Participants will conclude each day of their studio time by pressing the water out via hydraulic press and loading their Denim sheets of Handmade Paper into the dry box system.
SCHEDULE:
Class meets once a week for the month of March: Saturday March 7th, Saturday March 14th, Saturday March 21st, Saturday March 28th from 10:00AM to 4:00PM, breaking for Lunch from 12:30PM to 1:30PM.
MATERIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Bring your own boots & clothes you're comfortable getting wet. Aprons, Fiber, Materials & Equipment Provided.
***Participants are encouraged to bring their own person Denim fiber to be processed, with the caveat that it must be 100% Denim, which is 100% Cotton; meaning NO Spandex, NO Polyester, NO Nylon, NO Synthetics***
