COLOR PLAY: Introduction to Marbling on Paper‍ ‍taught by Claire Reynes

In this introductory workshop, immerse yourself in the meditative art of marbling on paper. Marbling is an art process with a long history and roots in many different countries. It involves floating paints on a liquid surface and using tools and the natural flow of the materials to create beautiful designs that can be printed on paper or fabric. With your own marbling vat at hand, delve into a world of color and pattern play. Starting with the foundational stone pattern, we will explore some simple combing patterns and image-making techniques. By the end, each participant will depart with a collection of uniquely marbled paper sheets and access to marbling instructions for continued exploration at home. All materials will be provided; however, participants are strongly encouraged to bring any papers that they might want to experiment with during the workshop. Handmade papers usually marble beautifully. Other fun things to try are sheet music, old book pages, textural papers, and rice papers. (An introductory course, open to all skill levels; from novice to intermediate.)

Workshop will cover:

- Preparation of marbling materials including paints and paper

-Exploration of color theory and creating a compelling palette

- Application of paint to marble bath

- Basic patterns including stoning and gel git as well as some simple combed patterns

- Participants will marble several sheets of paper (sizes 12x18 and 18x24)

- Instructional packet for at-home marbling

*** This workshop is best accomplished when standing, however, we can use low to the ground tables for anyone who is not able to stand for long periods of time. If you do not have low tables I can bring a small folding one as an option.

WHERE: Chicago PULP 1100 West 37th Street Chicago Illinois 60609

WHEN: Sunday May 10, 2026 from 1:00pm – 5:00pm
