Denim is a True Navy Blue color, smooth, opaque, durable and great for printmaking.
Process: We start by sourcing our Denim: via thrifting, donation or our own personal matter. This is 100% COTTON — meaning: no Spandex, no Polyester, no Nylon, no Synthetics. We cut the Denim down into small 1 inch squares, then soak the Denim in hot water for 24 hours. Using a Reina Hollander Beater we beat the Denim to a pulp. Denim sheets are pulled individually by hand using a Mould & Deckle, couched, hydraulic pressed and finally restraint dried. Each of our sheets of paper have deckle edges and are internally sized.
Fiber: Denim refers to the fiber & material relationship between Cotton & Indigo. Denim is made from the process of weaving warp yarn that has been Indigo-dyed with white weft yarn with a diagonal twill pattern. Denim come from Cotton, that has been picked, then deseeded, cooked, then the fiber is spun into yarn to be woven into the fabric we know as Denim.
Cotton: a soft white fibrous substance that surrounds the seeds of a tropical and subtropical plant and is used as textile fiber and thread for sewing.
Indigo: a tropical plant of the pea family, which was formerly widely cultivated as a source of dark blue dye (a color between blue and violet in the spectrum.)
