FLAX (Base)
Material & Process:
2 pounds of Flax is Beat to a Pulp for 1.5 hours using a Reina brand Hollander beater. Water is partially strained, so that the Abaca can be condensed into a plastic 5-gallon bucket for delivery, pickup and/or shipping.
Pulp Use:
Scoop Flax (Base) Pulp from buckets into desired vat or container, mix with water and disperse the Pulp with hands, paddles or a stir. This Type Beat is best for sheet forming, casting, and sculpture
Internal Sizing:
We add 1 tbsp of sizing per pound of fiber. Sizing is added to the pulp during the last 10 minutes of beating. Internal Sizing reduces the potential for absorbency, lessening the potential for bleeding of inks, paints or pigments. Sizing protects the fiber from oils, dirt and debris. Chicago Pulp uses Alkylketene Dimer liquid sizing concentrate.
